  • South Koreans are considered as the most cosmetically enhanced people in the world with one in five South Korean women admiting to have undergone cosmetic surgery at least once
  • Eventhough the United States is still considered as a country with most procedures done, South Korea is a country where most treatments is done per person
  • Plastic surgery is so common in South Korea
  • The surgeries are done with the most common reason which is to look more 'western'
  • Most people did the double eyelid surgery where the skin in the upper eyelid is reduced to make the eyes look bigger and rounder
  • Besides double eyelid surgery, nose surgery is also common in Korea in order to make the nose looks 'western'
  • Again, k-pop is mentioned as a factor that influenced people into getting plastic surgery in order to look prettier or more handsome

  • Australians are getting cosmetic surgery in order to give themselves an edge against young co-workers
  • People are worried about getting discriminated against at work because of their age

  • Linda Ayles said that if women in her 30s looks tired and not energetic, people will doubt their capability
  • Dr Ashley Granot, the director of medicine at the Ashley Centre said that 80 percent of his patients had cosmetic surgery because they lacked confidence and half of them said that it affects them at work

Plastic Surgery in South Korea

  • One in five South Korean women did plastic surgery.
  • In Gangnam district, there is a strip that is called 'beauty belt' which is filled with many surgery clinics.
  • In the past five years, Dr Rhee whose clinic is located in the beauty belt, has seen an increasing number of young people getting surgery. Ninety percent of the clinic's clients are under 30 years old and half of them are under 18 years old.
  • K-pop is an international phenomenon where the pop stars are known for their catchy tunes, synchronized dance moves, trendsetting fashion and also flawless faces.
  • K-pop stars are known to have those big eyes, high noses and slim jawlines, which are not the inherent features in Koreans.
  • It is said that k-pop is one of the major factor that influenced people in South Korea to get plastic surgery.
