Plastic surgery is a medical specialty concerning the correction or restoration of form and function. Many people these days may seem to view plastic surgery as a shortcut to beauty. For example, people in South Korea think of plastic surgery as something normal to do. They even think that it is necessary to do plastic surgery (click here for reference). Beauty plays a very important role in the social life of South Koreans. People there believed that the prettier you are, the more successful you will be. They are influenced by their public figures such as k-pop stars that are very popular these days. Plastic surgery corrupts people’s mind into getting more to what they think as ‘beautiful’. The truth is what’s on the outside and can be seen by other people is not the most important. The most important one is the beauty of the heart, not physical beauty. The plastic surgery craze should be stopped.
Plastic surgery benefits people only in short term, not in long term run. As people who took plastic surgery grow older, the job done to their face will eventually look worse since they aged. Getting plastic surgery done has a high percentage of risk. Besides the possibility of a failed surgery, there may also be those cases where the cost is competitive but will result in problematic cases. Every plastic surgery procedures are performed under general anesthesia. Anesthesia can be dangerous, or even fatal for human body. Blood may clot, heart rhythm may be abnormal, brain damage may happen and the worst case is that it can result as death (click here for reference).
People who take plastic surgery often may also affect their psychology and social life. It will attract gossip in the person’s social circle. Plastic surgery can also cause jealousy or insecurity to certain people in the social circle due to the improved look. Increased attention can also be totally comfortable to certain people. Plastic surgery can cause psychological and social effects depending to the individual’s expectation, mental, and also emotional state. Getting the job done doesn’t mean that it will change your life, solve your problems, or fix your relationship with someone. There is a case where a girl is bullied at school because of her nose. She decided to do plastic surgery in order to fix her relationship with her friends, thus not getting bullied again. Some people consider getting plastic surgery done with the hope of changing something in their life.
Plastic surgery can be addictive to certain point. People who take plastic surgery in order to look more or closer to ‘perfect’ can be addicted to getting the job done more and more. This is called BDD (Body Dysmorphic Disorder) (click here for reference), where people believe that they have severe flaws in their appearances. The so-called severe flaws can’t actually be fixed by any plastic surgeon because the flaws exist only to the person’s mind. When plastic surgery gets addictive, it is not good for the individual’s mental health because it can ruin their life or makes them always think why are they not good enough.
As to the bad, there can also be a good point to plastic surgery. Plastic surgery helps those people who are having health problems. For example face deformity that is caused by accidents or was there since a person was born. People with face deformity can be helped a lot by plastic surgery. Besides helping those with health problems, plastic surgery also boosts people’s confidence because, in most cases, people will feel more beautiful. But, the thing that we’re discussing here is about a perfectly normal people who think that they need plastic surgery. Even though people will feel more confident after taking surgery, it will not last in the long run. It will only benefit people in short term run. As they grow older, the surgeries that they took will eventually be not as good as it was back then.
The plastic surgery craze should be stopped. Greed over getting closer to ‘perfect’ will eventually cause bad consequences such as benefiting only for the short term run and risking health, affecting an individual’s psychological and mental state, or making people get addicted to it. Plastic surgery can be viewed as something good when the reason that a person took it is related to their physical health. Such as to fix their face after an accident. Plastic surgery may be a benefit only for those people who need it in order to improve their health. Even though people did plastic surgery in order to obtain ‘beauty’ and they’re satisfied with it, the ‘beauty’ will stay only for a while. As people grow older, physical beauty will eventually fade and what stayed is the beauty of their heart.

You are right Levina101. After I take some time to think, it is true that “the most important one is the beauty of the heart, not physical beauty.” If you think of it, our organic body is not something that will preserve long. “As people grow older, physical beauty will eventually fade and what stayed is the beauty of their heart.” If you believe “the prettier you are, the more successful you will be”, than you should think that the prettier your heart is, the more successful you will be. If I was a business owner and I Have a choice to choose between a person with good look or a person with a good heart, than obviously, I will choose the one with the good heart. This because a person with a good heart will have good integrity towards my business and yet good attitude among the workers. This is technically better than having a model walking around showing off his/her face.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree. I think that plastic surgery shouldn't be something we rely on to change our life. If we want to change things in our life, we should be relying on ourselves not on surgeries. Plus, creating an outer beauty doesn't necessarily bring success into our life. Success is what we obtain through our character and hard work, which is included in our inner beauty. I also agree to the fact that people nowadays are depending to much on plastic surgery without being aware of its risk and downsides. Thus, I believe, not all plastic surgery are a waste. Many have help improve the lives of people who have gone through serious illness such as severe burns, tumor and other skin diseases. In other words, I personally think that plastic surgery could be both good and bad according to its user and purpose.
ReplyDeleteFirst things first, I think that this article is very interesting to read and I strongly agree with the point that Levina101 tried to prove. I think that it is crucial for us humans to love ourselves and the way that we were born with. It is best to be original. Besides, plastic surgery can result in unwanted complications, one of the downsides of plastic surgery. I don't think that physical appearance is all that matters in a person. To achieve what we want in life, we must make an effort to achieve it rather than relying on the aid of plastic surgery. Before it gets worse and out of control, i think it's best to ban it to avoid addiction like what is stated in the essay.
